Know Your Cannabis
Sativa and Indica are the two major cannabis types. The variety of cannabis strains come from breeding, often between the two types. This is the genetic backing of unique tastes, smells, and appearances.
Landrace strains are often named after their native or adopted region. A combination of environmental conditions and selective breeding by native populations gave rise to these stable varieties. Over time, these strains will have developed unique characteristics to better survive in their distinct climate. Landrace strains are important because of their genetics since:
– The plants will evolve over time to make better use of resources in their specific habitat
– The plant is forced to adapt over time (changes in leaf size, colour, and phytochemical production).
Hindu Kush cannabis flower is a good example of an indica landrace strain that originally grew in the valleys of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.
A good example of a sativa landrace strain is Red Congolese. This strains lineage can be traced back to the Congo which is located in South-Central Africa.
